Tril’s eyes were clouded with sleep as he exited his den. His front legs stretched out in font of him and a yawn escaped him. As he stretched his eyes closed contently. Giving himself a shake, to clear the sleep from himself, he turned his gaze to the camp around him. His son and daughter were rolling around together, under the watchful amber-eyed gaze of his beautiful mate, Zora. He smiled as the sun lit up her golden brown pelt. Zelella, his daughter, caught sight of him and tumbled toward him, Chaos trailing after her. Tril’s deep amber eyes lit up as his two pups stumbled toward him, as they reached his paws he jumped away, avoiding a swift nip from Chaos. Tril looked down at them and sighed contently. Just at that moment, when it seemed nothing could ruin it, the beta of Wes-Willow raced over to Tril. Tril waved his tail for Zora to take the pups. She brushed her cheek against his before ushering the pups away. Tril’s voice was strong when he spoke, What is the problem, loyal Blazer?
Blazer looked into his alpha’s amber (almost orange) eyes. His leader’s voice was strong, and firm, but not mean. Blazer didn’t know what to say, he could find no words to say what he knew. He opened his mouth to say something, but the composed words died in his throat. In the end he stuck with a simple, Tril, Lark is in trouble. When his words were rewarded with a blank, almost tired look Blazer explained, Ranger has joined those who fight against the Shadows and the Red-Eyes, the Light wolves.
Tril brightened, a little. Ranger was his adopted sister, her own parents had not been caring and she came to Tril for help. Not long after Ranger was proclaimed his adopted sister her parents were killed when she went to visit her siblings, and she herself vanished. Then Tril realized where Lark lay, past the Frontier. His pack dreaded the long frightful desert landscape. He wouldn’t make them pass it, no matter how much he wanted to help the wolves of Lark. He was brought from his thought when Blazer said:
We must help them!
Tril only shook his head sadly. We cannot, I will not make the pack cross the Frontier if that is what they dread. And the pups, he looked over at where Zora, her gaze worried, sat with the pups, they would never make it. There is no water for miles, Blaze. I daresay none of us would survive. The golden orange alpha wolf sighed and looked at his flamed pelted beta with mournful eyes. I wish I could help them Blaze, but I will not make the pack do what they will not.
Blazer sighed too. He understood what his leader was telling him, but it was hard not to be upset. The young beta had wanted to see the one he loved for many years now. Her name was Whisper Willowson. He wondered if she still thought about him, like he did her, or if she had forgotten about him and found someone else. The last time he had seen her was when they were both pups - when Whisper had not yet been cursed with the Flame Eyes. The whole pack had agreed to send poor year-old Whisper into the cold almost winter months. Blazer went out at night to meet with her, always returning as the first raises of dawn shown. One night Whisper didn’t meet him and he suspected that she had forgotten about him, but the next night he saw a single golden tuft of fur. He knew that she had not forgotten him. But now, as far away as she was, he wasn’t sure she would remember him. For they both had grown quite a lot since they last seen each other. Blazer dipped his head to Tril, There is no more for me to say, as it seems you have made your mind up.
Tril watched his beta walk away from him, a strange feeling in his chest. He knew very well why Blazer had been the one to tell him of Lark’s troubles. He wanted to see Whisper again. Tril’s eyes were sad. He wanted his friend to find his love but he knew something that would break the flame-colored wolf’s heart. He knew that Whisper had become a Loner and that she loved a white shape-shifter called Blizzard. It was a little bit of information but not any hope for the flame-colored Blazer. Tril feared that if Blazer and Whisper did run into one another again that Blazer would try to hurt Blizzard, but mistakenly hurt Whisper. His thoughts were interrupted when Zora came back over and brushed herself against him.
Are you alright Twilight? asked the she-alpha in a soft gentle voice. Her nose touched her mate’s nose and she could see the worry in his eyes. What did Blaze tell you? Only she and Tril called Blazer, Blaze. And only Zora called Tril by his real name, Twilight. She looked into his orange eyes –she refused to call them amber, for she believe that was not what they were- she knew he was troubled by what Blaze had said and she wanted to know what he had said. She wanted to help her mate.
At last Tril answered his mate’s questions, I am just worried, that is all Zorri. Zora smiled when Tril called her by his name for her. That lit a smile on Tril’s face as well. Lark is in trouble, my love. But I will not make my pack cross the Frontier if they fear it. No matter how much I wish I could go to their aid. Tril looked at her his eyes grim.
Zora sighed at Tril’s words. She knew how much he would sacrifice for the lives of his pack. He would kill himself to protect them, and that is what, as he claimed, a rightful leader should do. But still his words made little sense to her. For Zora grew up in a place where if you were frightened of something you were forced to face it so your fear vanished. Her gaze swept around the camp looking at all the faces of her pack-mates. She wondered if all of them could overcome their fear of the Frontier. Why do you not ask them to try to face their fear? Conquer it?
Tril could see that Zora was not surprised when he said, They did not grow up like you. I know how you feel on that subject, Zora, but I can’t do that to them. His eyes softened, I’m sorry Zorri.
